It probably depends on whether you get the Nuss operation (which includes putting a bar in the chest and having it removed several years later) or the Ravitch operation. I had the Ravitch operation so I can only really speak to that one. The average hospital stay is 3-5 days, then two weeks before most can go back to school/work. Physical exertion is limited for 2-3 months. Chest numbness can last for several months or, in some cases, feeling may never return at all.
Usual recovery time in the hospital is four to five days
If your willing to be dedicated with Bracing, it can correct it over time. Bracing helps tremendously with the rib flaring, but it definitely depends on the type of brace that you use. An orthotic company called LaceIT has a brace specifically for it, and I have heard very good reviews about it from Pectus Excavatum sufferers. To find out more check out the Related Link below. It WILL get deeper over time, that is part of the condition. To drastically reduce, and sometimes correct Pectus Excavatum, many people recommend Bracing as a treatment method. Although there are surgeries, they are very painful and invasive. A brace that receives great reviews on many website is LaceIT's PE brace (http://laceitpe.com). Bracing will force your flared ribs in and your sternum out, thus correcting your sunken chest. It can become very serious. Over time your chest sinks farther and farther in, and it is always a good idea to start treatments before the bones begin to harden. Bracing is by far the less intrusive way to treat. Surgery and other alternate methods can be very intense and extremely painful. Many people have found bracing to be very successful. A brace that has received very good reviews is a Pectus Excavatum brace designed by LaceIT called LaceIT PE.
Many people do not prefer surgery, as it is extremely invasive and very painful. Some options that can be considered are bracing, where you apply pressure to your flaring ribs for an extended period of time and it forces your sternum out and the flaring ribs back in. LaceIT's PE brace has received very good reviews.
Additional information: I had surgery for pectus excavatum a few months a go and had a bar inserted in my chest. During the first surgery the bar came loose and they had to do it again. The second time they placed the bar in an odd position. Also, before the surgery I was having similar pains, and I'm wondering if the bar came loose.
