What is the testing method of flame retardant textile?
Mainly from two points to evaluate the flammability of flame retardant fabric, the property of easy to ignite, the flammability of textile (the property of flame retardant). There are two standards to evaluate the flammability of flame retardant fabric: 1. The burning rate of textile. Flame retardant fabric contact with the fire in a certainly time follow to the standard, then move the fire, to measure afterflame time and afterglow time and the char length. The shorter time of after flame and afterglow, the lower of the char length, it shows that flame retardant property of fabric is better, on the other hand, the FR property is bad. 2. Oxygen index method (LOI ). Fabric burning need oxygen, LOI is expression of oxygen needed by fiber burning, so through measure LOI can judge the FR property of fabric, the higher of LOI, the higher of oxygen concentration for keeping the fiber burning, it means that the fabric is difficult to burn. The index can be expressed by the minimum volume percentage of oxygen , what needed by sample is keep burning in nitrogen and oxygen mixed gas, LOE=oxygen concentration / (oxygen concentration + nitrogen concentration)*100%, LOI <20%, is combustible fiber, LOI between 20 ~ 26%, is flammable fiber; LOI between 26 ~ 34%, is flame retardant fiber; Oxygen index above 35%, is non flame fiber. FR textiles can be divided into non-flame fiber, flame retardant fiber, combustible fiber and burn easily fibers. non-flame fiber( fire cannot lit)-- LOI value was over 35, glass fiber, metal fiber, asbestos fiber, carbon fiber: flame retardant fiber(fire can lit it, but will be extinguished without fire) --LOI value was over 35, chloro fiber, aramid fiber, modacrylic fiber.: combustible fiber(fire can lit it, continued fire without fire)-- LOI value was over 20, polyester, nylon, silk, wool; burn easily fibers(burns rapidly, burns up without fire) -- LOI value was under 20, cotton, linen, viscose, acrylic, etc. Limited oxygen index LOI: under the stated experimental conditions, the material can be maintained the combustion state needed the oxygen minimum concentration of oxygen-nitrogen mixture gas. Testing method: placed a certain size sample on the sample holder, adjusting the ratio of oxygen and nitrogen, igniting the sample with a specific igniter, makes the sample self-extinguishing after burning the certain time(2 minutes), or certain damage length (40mm), under this condition, according to the oxygen /nitrogen flow to calculated the LOI.

The shorter of after flame, smolder time and damaged length, the better performance the fabric got.2、According to LOI sample test: Oxygen index means oxygen need of fabric burning, the high oxygen index means fabric burning need a high oxygen concentration, that is hard to burn. The volume of oxygen concentration is 21% in air, the fabric belongs to inflammable fiber when burning oxygen index is lower than 20%; it belongs to combustible fiber that oxygen index is between 20% to 26%; it belongs to flame-retardant fiber that oxygen index is between 26% to 34%, it belongs to non-flammable that the oxygen index is higher than 35%.Note.
