Nucleic acid RESIDUES are what make up DNA. DNA codes for RNA, RNA codes for protein. Protein (or some specific ones, at least), is then required to form new DNA.

While they are both considered as Chains, the subunit monomers are different for each: the chain-links of proteins are amino acids whereas for nucleic acids they are called nucleotides.
