Solstice is the longest day of the year. Exuinox is the shortest day of the year.

Summer is the hottest time of the year. Winter the coldest time of year.

This temperature difference is a result of the diferent lengths of the day. Solstice is around the middle of summer then, just as equinox is around the middle of winter.

Of course there are other things to consider - living near the equator or further away changes everything to do with seasons and even soltice/equinox. In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are all reversed too.
