When the Earth is revolving around the sun it gets different angles of the sun's rays. In summer, we get direct rays. In winter, indirect rays. Spring and fall are in the middle there. Also because of this in winter the days are shorter, summer days longer. It has NOTHING to do with how far away the Earth is from the sun, because if this were true then summer would actually be winter (in summer you are "farther" away from the sun). The reason the hemispheres have differing seasons, well, the Earth's axis is the answer to that. Because the earth is tilted on its axis, the hemispheres get different angles of the sun's rays, causing the opposing seasons. (If this wasn't any help look at some kind of diagram and you'll see)

∙ 12y agoI think the seasons are divided due to the temperature and amount of day time during a period, say 30 days or so. When the sun moves closer to which hemisphere, that hemisphere is getting hotter and hotter, that's how you feel Spring and Summer. Usually on 22nd June, the sun reaches to the farthest point to the north hemisphere and starts moving south. So the north hemisphere is getting increasingly cool, while the south hemisphere getting increasingly hot.
