They were first cousins

Answer

According to Luke's Gospel, John the Baptist and Jesus were second cousins, as their mothers, Elizabeth and Mary, were cousins. This information is not found outside Luke's Gospel, and the majority of New Testament scholars dismiss the story as unhistorical, with Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) saying that Elizabeth was a literary creation by the author of Luke's Gospel. So, on the scholarly view, John and Jesus were not related.

Answer

They were second cousins--though they didn't know each other very well.

==new answer== They are the same person-different lifetimes. Remember Jesus said that Elijah had already come and they didn't know him and abused him.

Elisha and Jesus are the same, different lifetimes.

(New Answer from another individual.)

Actually Elijah and John the Baptist are connected and linked as being just one person by Jesus. Consult MARK 9: 9-13 and MATTHEW 11:11-15. The concept here is that Elijah MUST APPEAR FIRST, before the coming of the Messiah, the last judgement, and the end of time.

This eschatological belief was held among some Jews in the first century AD and takes its origin from MALACHI 4:5.

The immediate context is this: Jesus' disciples want to know how can Jesus be the expected Messiah, if Elijah has not yet come. Jesus replies that Elijah has indeed come, and that John the Baptist is, in truth, Elijah!

Answer:

Note to above: Jesus said John came in the spirit of Elijah, it did not mean it actually was Elijah back from heaven in physical form. If you read, you will notice however they even dressed alike however.

They are not connected as Elijah the prophet lived years before John the baptist.

No, they were two different men. But some may call John a 'type' of Elijah.

What are some differences between civil marriage and a relationship in the Netherlands?

Marriage is a type of relationship. However, "relationship" often refers to an informal romantic relationship between unmarried persons. In this sense the difference would be that one is licensed and registered with the state, the other is not. Marriage has statutory rights and responsibilities associated with it; an informal relationship does not.

What is a biblical unitarian?

Most Christians would agree that there is no such thing as a "Biblical Unitarian", if by that we mean that Unitarianism is Biblical. Unitarianism rejects the trinity (Three distinct persons, Father, Son and Spirit, who are indivisibly one God), a doctrine which historic Christianity has insisted upon as being clearly displayed in the Bible.
