This question provides the opportunity to speak about politics to its relationship to political science. Often times the two terms are treated as the same thing, however, they are not. Politics involves, as one example, of the art involved to pass a controversial bill in the US Congress, when there seems that the chances are slim to do so. Politics also involves with an individual or political party take a stand on a particular public issue and running for elective office on that position in policy. And, running for public office and the election chances of a candidate is based on public opinion polls.

Recently US President Obama warned Russian Federation President Putin not to invade the Crimea. Obama was making a political statement.

Now, in comparison to the information stated above, political science, is a social study that involves political philosophy and how it may affect the political policies of a nation. Political Science also makes much of the study of a nation's government and how it functions. With that in mind, to say that an editorial in a newspaper endorsing a political candidate based on what the individual believes should be done to reduce the national debt, touches on, but does not encompass political science.

Political science also involves the study of political systems of the past and the history of a certain type of government, the ancient Roman Republic, as one example.

This is not an area of politics, but rather an area of political history. And the philosophy behind the ancient Roman republic.

Additionally, political decisions often have implications for other disciplines, creating interconnections and influencing policies in areas such as public health, education, and the environment.
