Puritanism started in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Puritans claimed that the Church of England still held remnants of the Roman Catholic Church even after settlements had been reached between the two churches. The Puritans wanted to 'purify' religion from the Roman Catholic church and it's popes. They believe it is necessary to be in a relationship with God in order to reach salvation.
