It fires both barrels because it isn't clean. The stock needs to be removed and the internals need a good blasting with cleaner and compressed air.
I usually use 1/4 on the bottom barrel (fires first) and 1/2 on the top barrel. This is because when the bird is fleeing you, the first barrel fires a bigger swarm. If i miss, the top barrel fires a more compact swarm for longer range.

Long barreled gun, with grooves on the inside of barrel- is a rifle. Shorter version is a carbine. Handguns, such as pistols and revolvers also have grooved barrels.
Arrows fires from bows were the best weapons available.

Usually lightning caused fires. In reality the fires were good for the prairies because the grass seeds were released. Some Native American tribes would start fires to move the buffalo toward them so they could hunt them.
