A decimal tab stop is wonderful for numbers that are followed by decimal points. For example, when working with a number like 1,345.280, it uses the decimal point for the tab position. The numbers 1,345 space to the right of the tab, the decimal is exactly on the tab mark, and the numbers 280 fall to the right of the tab.
Your numbers will look like this:
1,345.280
2,911.75
4,464.2257
8,721.2557
See how the decimal always stays in the center? That's how a decimal tab works.

tab stop
a tab is inserted
These are tab stops. In Microsoft Word you can create a tab stop by clicking and dragging on the horizontal ruler, where they appear as flipped-over black L or T marks. If there are faint marks below the ruler at 1-inch intervals, these are the default tab stops.
There are five types: Left, Right, Center, Decimal and Bar.
The custom tab marker is different for each kind of tab, so for example a left tab marker looks different to a decimal tab marker, so in this sense they will indicate the alignment that would be implemented if the tab key is pressed and the tab is used. If the tab is not used, then it does not indicate what way the text is aligned.
It is a tab that is used to align decimal points. When you set a decimal tab and hit the tab key, as you type it will align numbers around the decimal point. As soon as you type a decimal point, the decimal point will stay fixed under the tab. It is particularly handy when numbers have different amounts of decimal places.
