First, find the camshaft sensor. It will be right in the front of the engine near the valve cover. Disconnect the plug and remove the bolt. Pull the camshaft sensor out. Insert the new camshaft sensor and reattach the plug.

There was only a visible cam sensor on '98-2001 Explorer 302's. If you have a distributor, your cam sensor is in the distributor. If you don't have a distributor, it is where the distributor used to be on the front of the intake manifold.
There are a few symptoms when a car has a bad cam sensor. A few of these are sputtering, poor acceleration, and the engine stalling.

There is an intake and exhaust cam sensor, both are located at the front of the engine in the head. They have 2 wire/pin connectors. They intake cam sensor is the one on the driver's side. See orange circle in picture/link below.
