The rivers surrounding New York City are the Hudson River, the Harlem River and the East River. However, the Hudson is the only true river of the three. The Harlem and East Rivers are tidal straits.
The East River connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the bay known as the Long Island Sound, down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor.
The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River, and flows down over the top of Manhattan and the bottom of the Bronx, into the East River.
