The International Space Station (ISS) has supported permanent human existence in space since late 2000. Typically crew members are on-orbit for 4 to six months at a time. A new crew shows up to take over ISS duties before the old crew returns to Earth.

There is normally a crew of 6 aboard. This is made up of 2 three man, six month expeditions that overlap each other by 3 months. When the shuttle is at the station, it usually carries a further 6 or 7 crew. Of the 6 long duration crew, 3 are Russian, 2 American and 1 European or Japanese astronaut.
