The word verse means the section of text of The Bible which is beingreferred to but more specific than just referring to a book and a chapter. See the example below.
This is text from Genesis chapter 1. It is the first chapter in the book of Genesis. Then verse two is the one marked with the number 2, which is the second verse in chapter one.
The Beginning
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning---the first day.
Novels are divided into chapters but the Bible goes one step further and labels specific sentences or a number of sentences with the same number.

The root word for "verse" comes from the Latin word "versus," meaning "to turn." This is because poetry and verses often involve a rhythmic and structured pattern of words that "turn" or flow in a particular way.
