it depends on where you run. Some places run 4ks, some 5ks, some 6ks. It really depends on the invitational.
There is cross country running, which is long distance running (4k, 5k, 8k 10k) k is kilometers. and there is also cross country skiing, which is long distance skiing.

If you are going to do this for a competition, than a mix of short distance timed running and long distance running. You should keep a mix of fast short exercises and longer distance ones.
