The scale goes like this:

Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do

Starting from C, play 8 white note in a row, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C. That is a major scale. It is also known as the Ionian mode.

Starting from any note, play 8 notes in a row, first note, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step and half step. (For example, starting with E - E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E.

If you are looking at the key signature, in the case of sharps, the major key is one half step above the last sharp and, in the cast of flats, the major key is five half steps below the last flat.
