Electromagnetic radiation permeates the universe at many wavelengths. For example, at some wavelengths we are able to use X-rays to take pictures of our bones. At others we can listen to the radio.

A very small section of these wavelengths are called the "Visible Light Spectrum." And within that spectrum different wavelengths are picked up as different colors by the rods and cones in the retinae in the back of our eyes.
