It refers to and is a property of anything which remains the same. It is a term used in mathematics, mechanics etc for example:

  • in y=mx+c, the constant c remains the same when x and y change as variables. m can also be a constant in whcih case you can say that the rate of change is constant.
  • E=MC^2, C represents the speed of light in a vacuum which is thought of as being the same everywhere in the universe.

In science, a constant is a measurement, usually in an experiment, that never changes. It is used to compare and/or contrast the values of other variables in the same situation.

Constant and True is the Clan Rose Family Motto found on the Clan Rose Family Crest. It is not that the Clan nor its family is constant and true, but being founded on Christian Beliefs, it is our Lord and Savior Jesus who is Constant and True.

Hi Michael Rose,

It's actually Kilravock Castle (pronounced 'Kilrawk') is a traditional Scottish castle, the Tower being built in 1460. It's beautiful, you should check it out.

I disagree with the earlier answer (agree with Lulu Beatson below).

"continuous" is irrelevant. A constant is a number or letter whose value, in a particular context, remains the same. The equation of a straight line (in 2-dimensions) can be written in the form ax + by + c = 0 where a, b and c are constants. a and b do not stand alone, as suggested above. For a given line, a, b and c are constants but another set of constants will give a different line - this is what is implied by the "context".

A constant has the same value no matter where and whenever used as for example the value of pi in a circle remains the same whatever the size of the circle.

Anyone know anything about homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a constant internal environment and when it comes to living organisms, it can mean the maintenance of a constant temperature, pH, and chemical concentration.

When the temperature is constant will the the volume of a gas decrease as the pressure decreases?

At constant temperature p.V=constant, so pressure INcreases when decreasing the volume.

What is the formula for finding pressure?

I suppose you mean the formula for the variation in pressure. The simplest expression of this is, at a fixed temperature, and for a given mass of gas, pressure x volume = constant. This is known as Boyle's Law. If the temperature is changing, then we get two relations: 1. If the pressure is fixed, volume = constant x temperature (absolute) 2. If the volume is fixed, pressure = constant x temperature (absolute) These can be combined into the ideal gas equation Pressure x Volume = constant x Temperature (absolute), or PV = RT where R = the molar gas constant. (Absolute temperature means degrees kelvin, where zero is -273 celsius)

When the temperature of of gas increases at constant pressure its?

As pressure increases, if temperature is constant, the gas will decrease in volume.
