In areas above the dam (mainly Sudan) the effects of annual flooding is still observed, this occurs in the "summer" season from about May through September. The Aswan High Dam that controlls the flooding of the Nile in Egypt was completed in 1970, since then no unregulated flooding has occured below the dam. Thus the fertility of the soil in the Lower Nile Valley will not now be renewed naturally on an annual basis as it was in pre-dam times.
The Nile River flooded yearly because of the heavy rains along the sources of the White and Blue Niles. Currently, the Aswan dam stops the Nile River from flooding when it was finished being built back in the 1970s.
