Howdah or houdah
Hi there! The covered seat on a camel or elephant is called a howdah also houdah, in Arabic. It would be known as a sedan chair as well. This type of seat protects the rider with a canopy and/or rail. Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- this is actually something i dreamt aboutand 2 questions came up , the first was the name of the elephant chair wich somewhere in the back of my mind is called a gondola as in the Venetian boat , i am sure i hve read this somewhere in the pastjust hoping someone can verify this for me
A howdah. It is referred to as a houdah or howdah. While its main purpose was to provide a more comfortable seat for someone than an elephant's back, it was also a sign of wealth.
I came across this in a broadsheet newspaper (The Irish Times) crossword. It's a howdah.look it up on wikipedia or in a dictionary...This has already cropped up by the way under:The name of the seat used on an elephant? andWhat is the name of canopied elephant seat?hope this was helpful anyway.
