I am pretty sure you are talking about the oil level gauge which comes on when you start the car. Once the engine is started, the gauge drops back to 0, and the light behind it will go off.
This is the oil level light which will come on when you put the ignition on but dont start the engine. It will tell you how much oil you have in the car. It goes off once the engine starts.
