The gas tank on the 2001 Kia Sportage holds 14 gal..
The gas tank on the 2001 Kia Optima holds 17.2 gal..
The gas tank on the 2001 Kia Rio holds 11.9 gal..
It is located inside the fuel tank and is integrated with the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit. It is a non-serviceable item.
check all fuses and relays first, if it is not this it will be the fuel sending unit which should be in the gas tank

The fuel sending unit in a 2003 KIA Sedona is found under the rear passenger seat. There are some plastic heads which hold the locking ring and have to be removed for you to access it.Ê
There are two reasons that might cause it first some one siphoned the gas out of your KIA the other is that your fuel gauge sending unit in the tank stuck in one position and over the time it set it released its self.
I have the same problem with my 1998 Kia Sephia and it is most likely the "sending unit" which is probably located in the gas tank. Could also be a short in a wire. When I fix mine I will re-post.
