First, the person picked up the receiver, sending a signal to the local telephone switch that he or she wanted to make a call. The local switch connected that line to a dialing circuit, which sent a dial tone down the line. The person then dialed the number. If the dialed number was outside the local area, the call was sent to the person's chosen long-distance company. The switch analyzed the number, checking in a database to find out how to route the call to the cellular company's network. The cellular company checked the last known location of the cellphone and sent a signal out over the airwaves from nearby towers to ring the cellphone. When your cellphone responded, it connected to the nearest cell tower and completed the circuit. As you move, your cellphone communicates with other nearby towers to figure out when it's time to hand off from one tower to the next.
