Book 8 is called 'The Hostile Hospital'. Violet, Klaus and Sunny end up staying in a hospital. They find a file which shows a picture of their parents, Jacques Snicket and an unknown man, and a caption saying that there could be a Survivor of a fire, which leads the orphans into thinking that one of their parents could be alive. Violet is then captured by Esme Squalor, given anaesthetic, and an anagram of her name is hidden in a patient list. Klaus and Sunny disguise themselves as doctors and decode the patient list to find Violet. Count Olaf is planning to operate on Violet by giving her a cranioectomy (cutting her head off). When Klaus and Sunny follow Esme Squalor to the operating theatre they have to perform the operation themselves. Klaus tries to stall the operation to give time for the anaesthetic to wear off, but he has to make a quick escape with Violet and Sunny. Count Olaf sets the hospital on fire, and Violet, Klaus and Sunny are trapped in a store cupboard. Violet wakes up in time to invent something to get the three siblings out of the burning building, and because they are believed to be murderers, the book ends with them climbing into the trunk of Olaf's car as he drives away, to escape from being captured by the authorities.
Continuing from the Penultimate Peril, they're riding in a boat with Count Olaf and the Baudelaires have to pedal while Count Olaf brags about having the Baudelaire fortune with him. They are hungry.
A large storm comes and they end up near a coastal shelf. They are all safe and okay.
They spot an island and they go there. While they're on the way Count Olaf decides that he's the king of that island and names it Olaf-Land while the Klaus tries to tell him there are already people on it so he can't be their king.
When they arrive they meet Friday. Friday tells them about their island and their customs. When the Baudelaires tell Friday about Count Olaf Friday makes Olaf stay away from the island and invites the Baudelaires to the island.
Ishmael, their ruler tells everyone to do everything. When he doesn't like something someone has, he says, I won't force you but I think you should throw it away, and stuff like that.
Everyone wears white clothing and drinks coconut cordial all day. Count Olaf get's locked in a cage on the island. The Baudelaires have the Incredible Deadly Viper with them.
Decision Day is approaching where after a storm islanders bring what they find and Ishmael decides if they should keep or abandon it.
Some of the islanders want to abandon Ishmael on Decision Day some don't and they ask the Baudelaires but the Baudelaires aren't sure.
Count Olaf wants to be out of his cage but the Baudelaires wont' let him. Olaf says if he gets out of his cage he'll tell the Baudelaires secrets and the history of this island so the Baudelaires are not sure.
One day the Incredibly Deadly Viper shows the Baudelaires a large library about them in the pile of junk.
They discover things like how Ishmael predicts the weather, newspapers about the Baudelaires and their mothers diary. Suddenly Ishmael sees the Baudelaires and he tells a strange secret about them and their family.
