the shortest air route is a great circle
Helsinki is in Finland and there is no short route. It is about a 12 hour flight. I flew to Russia ( not far from Finland) and had to fly into Germany change flights for another 4 hours to Russia. I wanted to visit Helsinki while in St. Petersburg, but that was impossible because there is nothing but a train that stops at every station enroute to Helsinki and I didn't have the time to spend a day getting there. If you are going to Helsinki take a light weight jacket or get a beautiful sweater there. You are only 500 miles from the Artic circle it is still cool in the summer months and you will also experience white nights.
I went on a American airlines flight from San Francisco then I went on a British airways flight to Helsinki. I don't if it's the best route but that's how I got to Helsinki from San Francisco.
