A person of this faith should answer, but until one comes along the gesture of sign of peace is commonly shaking hands but it can vary based on decisions of Church officials. For example, it can be holding hands, embracing, etc. It signifies the wish that "the peace of the Lord be with you always."

Catholic AnswerIn the Extraordinary Rite (the Mass before the Second Vatican Council), the Communion Rite always began with the Rite of Peace, where the priest would say "Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum (May the peace of the Lord be always with you.) And the servers would respond Et cum spiritu tuo. (And with thy spirit.) In the Ordinary Form (the Mass since the Second Vatican Council), the priest now turns and shakes the altar boys' hands, and the people do the same with each other. Although if it is flu season, they may just wish each other peace! Family members may hug, but this is not in the rubrics.

When do Roman Catholics exchange the sign of peace?

'Roman' Catholics do not exchange any sign of peace, ever.Catholic priests may display their sign of the cross upon others but that is not a sign of peace. It is a sign of their religion and may, or may not, be believed by others.Catholic AnswerIt's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church. The sign of peace is exchanged between the priest and the people immediately preceding the Lamb of God in the Communion Rite near the end of Mass. The priest may ask the people to exchange a sign of peace amongst themselves at this point.

Do Catholics believe religion causes conflict not peace?

If Catholics believed that religion caused conflict, then they would be contradicting themselves. Catholicism IS a religion. The reason there is no peace is because people sin. Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Pride, Wrath, Envy. Not only this, but many people misinterpret what the Catholic Church teaches and this causes people to break away and create other religions, such as Martin Luther. Hence the many, MANY misconceptions about the Catholic Church. So i implore you to thoroughly research the questions you have about the Catholic faith from the Catholic's point of view. -Ask a Catholic priest -search for answers at www.newadvent.org or at www.catholic.org or at www.ourcatholicfaith.org And if you were wondering, I am Roman Catholic.
