The play A Midsummer Night's Dream was written by William Shakespeare in about 1595 or so. Opinions differ. The plot is more or less original, although Shakespeare drew on classical legend and folktales and legends to create it. It is significant in creating an image of fairies which was different from earlier images and which strongly influenced succeeding generations, even to the present day. The notion of fairies as tiny creatures comes mainly from Shakespeare.
