He died in order to save everyone from their sins. When he "died", he went down to hell, and up to heaven, and got the keys from heaven so that everyone that asks him into their heart goes to heaven. I probably answered a bunch of questions there. John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that He gave His only begottten son, and whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
