In computer graphics, the relative horizontal and vertical sizes. For example, if a graphic has an aspect ratio of 2:1, it means that the width is twice as large as the height. When resizing graphics, it is important to maintain the aspect ratio to avoid stretching the graphic out of proportion. The term is also used to describe the dimensions of a display resolution. For example, a resolution of 800x600 has an aspect ratio of 4:3.

Aspect ratio in and of itself is nothing - the problems introduced by A.R. relate to the original vs final format. Data (visual information) may be cutoff or sheared, smeared or fuzzy because of the conversion process of the media eg. Widescreen vs Pan and Scan: Widescreen gives the full effect of the movie screen but requires the image to be shrunk, Pan and Scan allows the image to fill the screen but the media editors for the final format (say DVD) have to shift every so often to include data on the side of the image.

For just computer A.R. the difference is in your visual field - do you want a long vertical screen (like long document) or a wide horzontal screen as if it were a desk? For computers (and not video) it's just a matter of choice vs application used.

Why wide screen TV?

Wide screen TV provides a picture aspect ratio that has been found to offer a more pleasing shape to watch. The 4 : 3 format of older televisions has been used for decades because that is how television was first formatted. The move to HD has allowed a new aspect ratio to be introduced in North America because the new resolutions demand new equipment. However, in Europe, the change to widescreen began in the 1990s. The UK is fully widescreen on all major broadcasts whether they are SD or HD.
