George Orwell wanted to emphasize the consequence of a dictatorial society. The depiction of the society shows a Dystopia where natural feelings and emotions are not allowed to be expressed. Family values are also eradicated. Hence this may be what George Orwell feared may happen in future.

The ending is bleak indeed- it means that when faced with a regime like that of Big Brother, nobody however brave and determined can withstand it's tactics to break you and make you betray yourself, your ideals and your loved ones. It will always get you in the end- the once courageous, counter-revolutionary Winston is reduced to a shambling, pathetic shell of his former self who is reduced into mechanically 'loving' Big Brother because his very will has been destroyed. It is a stark warning against such regimes ever being allowed to come into being, be they Extreme Left or Extreme Right.
