He then symbolically dies to show that after the creation of 'Jay Gatsby', 'Jay Gatz' can no longer survive in the real world. Long story short, it's called "The Great Gatsby" because Gatsby is great. Gatsby is great because he is larger than life in his optimism. This is ironic because it is this optimism that ultimately kills him.
