Northern Ireland has come a long way since the days where we were pictured on the news rioting and killing on another. There has been a power-sharing agreement, which sees the Protestant and Unionist Democratic Union Party (DUP) and the Catholic Republican Sinn Fein working together for the good of the country. Things have got a lot better and Northern Ireland is moving forward in time slowly. Some gaps still need to be bridged but we're getting there. There are more integrated schools which see Protestant and Catholic children going to school together and learning to get along, and as the new generation comes through there are less and less sectarian attacks. However, not all is well. There still remains the threat of the paramilitary organisations, and there have been bouts of attacks and recent rioting, although things are definitely not as bad as they used to be and things are getting better.

The Northern Ireland conflict has been ongoing for centuries. It has been predicated on sectarian (Catholic/Protestant) conflict and their political relationship to the United Kingdom. Ireland was partitioned by the United Kingdom. Furthermore, Northern Ireland was subjected to years of military occupation in attempt to pacify nationalist and sectarian insurgencies.

All paramilitaries have disarmed and Parliament is governing successfully.

The only trouble is infrequent small bombings in rural areas, carried out by a small group with little resources calling themselves the Real IRA (not affiliated with the original IRA, who have disarmed).

Northern Ireland doesn't have a high profile internationally in the news nowadays, as it did in the past. It is mostly very normal stories there now. At the time of answering this, the 4th of October 2014, issues around organising the budget and getting money to run the different elements of Northern Ireland are the main issues. Like anywhere in the world, news stories do change, so you need to look at one of the news sites like:
