It depends on the size.
When a baby narwhal feels threatened it will start to rotate, the corkscrew thread on it's tusk acts in much the same way as a drill bit. If a predator approached the baby narwhal from the front the baby will drill through the beast. This behavior is common amongst all narwhals however, due to their smaller size the baby narwhal may be able to squeeze it's body through the hole made by it's tusk and emerge out the other side. Disoreintated and covered in blood and guts the narwhal will contintue to swim forwards for several hours afterwards, the parents being unable to recognise it by sight due to the bloody waters and the innards masking the babys smell will be unable to follow the child. Lost and alone the baby will quickly learn how to fend for it'self or die.

Typically, the adult narwhal tusk can be 2-2.5 inches thick at the base. The tusk gradually tapers and decreases in size, base to tip. At the middle, it may be 1.5-2 inches thick. At the end, it may be as narrow as a baby's finger.
