This depends on the kids. A calm child of 8 or older who is experienced with dogs could get on very well with a Yorkshire terrier or a pug, both toy breeds. However, these animals are so small that a younger child might accidently injure them, or the dogs might become frightened by rough treatment and bite the child. Terriers, while cute and friendly, are often very excitable. I'd recommend a beagle or a miniature poodle, if you are most concerned with having a child-friendly small pet. These are slightly larger and sturdier than toys, but be sure to research both breeds before you buy or adopt a pup. Another good choice is the rat terrier, a hardy little pooch that is calmer than most of this group and good with children.
