For a violin (or any string instrument in general), rubbing the bow across the metal strings is the source of the sound. Rubbing the bow across the string causes it to vibrate at a certain frequency, depending on the note that the string is tuned to. The strings themselves are not able to amplify themselves though, so the vibrations move through the wood.
The upper piece of wood is made of very springy spruce, which vibrates with the string and amplifies it a bit, also changing the tone of the sound which is what we hear. The back is maple, which is strong and makes the sound even louder. Other parts of the instrument also play specific roles, but sound is generally produced by moving the string then amplifying it through the wood.

It depends on your electric violin. A hollow-body violin with an acoustic pickup (basically, a traditional violin with a microphone built into it) will make sound just like a standard acoustic violin. A solid-body electric violin will make sound without an amp...but unless you're the violin player, you won't hear it.

No. The older the violin, the better the sound.
The string makes the sound post vibrate, therefore the sound comes out the f-holes, which are on both sides of the violin.
Put your first finger on the G string (very left). That is the lowest A sound for the violin.
