Hernan Cortes is not accurately matched with the area he explored or conquered. Under the command of Cortes, the Aztec Empire in Mexico was conquered, not the Inca Empire in South America. That was conquered by Francisco Pizarro.
Most of this area was conquered by successive waves of Spanish conquistadors; Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro are the most renowned among them. Present-day Brazil was settled by Portugal, while several islands in the Caribbean were taken by other European powers, such as France, the Netherlands and Britain.

So any lands outside of that were unconquered (examples are North America, South America, Antarctica, Austrailia, Africa and many more).

The Romans spoke Latin which is the basis for all Romance Languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian). The Spaniards conquered southwestern North America, Central America, and South America (except Brazil which was Portuguese). All these conquered lands spoke one of two languages based on Latin so it was natural to identify the area as "Latin America".

Francisco Pizarro's enduring legacy is the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire in South America. He established Spanish control over large parts of the region and paved the way for further Spanish colonization in the area. His actions had a lasting impact on the indigenous populations and the history of the Americas.
