Starting writers generally cannot get salaries. A writer must have completed at least once successful work to be considered a writer, unless writing for a periodical. Initial wages for writers at a newspaper or other periodicals would not be salaries, as they would typically not be a full time job. In the beginning, a writer should not expect to make more than $30,000 per year in the US.
