The characters start out idealistic and deeply in love. Despite the fact that Della has saved for months to buy Jim a good present, she still only has a dollar and eighty-seven cents. She cannot buy him the kind of gift she wants to with this meager amount, and so in a selfless act sells her beautiful hair to get the money she needs.
Jim also displays the same selflessness when he sells his gold watch to buy Della's present.
And now the irony begins. Della has bought a chain for the watch Jim no longer owns, and Jim has bought Della combs for the hair she no longer has. At the end, both characters realize their foolishness and mature some as a result of it.
