The famous lion statue with a human head is known as the Sphinx. It is an ancient statue located in Giza, Egypt, and is believed to have been built around 2500 BC. The Great Sphinx of Giza is considered one of the most iconic and mysterious sculptures in the world.
In 1984, the statue was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In its "Statement of Significance", the world organization found that the statue was a "masterpiece of the human spirit" which "endures as a highly potent symbol - inspiring contemplation, debate and protest - of ideals such as liberty, peace, human rights, abolition of slavery, democracy and opportunity."
