Medical debt in New Jersey is SiX years....but if you sent up a payment plan everytime you make a payment is resets the clock back to zero. This does not stop them from coming for a wage garnishment! So if you get sued and the amount is under $ 15,000.00 you better answer the complaint...failure to submitt and answer the complaint is a default and hospitals and medical providers just love NJ Special Civl Part where they can sue you for $ 15,000.00 and under. Note: Court Persons make a commission in NJ on Special Civil Part Judgments. So if you get sued with a complaint make sure you file an answer within 20 days or you will be in defalut and the creditor wins. You can't go to jail for owing money. There is no debtors prison in the United States. You can however get sued to for the money. As long as the hospital wants and tries to collect the money, you are responsible for paying it back. Whether or not they go to all the trouble to collect it is up to them.

Generally hospitals collect insurance money fairly quickly and sell the bill to 3rd party collectors for pennies on the dollar. You then have a collector harrassing you with calls and threatening letters but there is a way to make it stop. Cindym

Medical services are typically provided based on a written agreement. In New Jersey the limit is set at 6 years. The time starts from the last acknowledgement of the debt, such as a payment.
