Cheese is a good story which shows the lives of Nepalians in 60s- 80s. Although the storyline is not that strong and interesting, it is capable of giving a clear view on ordinary peoples' behavior and attitude mixed with suspicion towards the newly opened wide new world.
It shows the usual background of a huge urban family in Eastern Asia. Young Gopi was a boy full of desires and curiosity. Though he willingly desired to taste cheese, he never got the chance until twenty years passed.
It's a great surprise to see how his childish desire for cheese remained for that long time. Gopi seemed to be a very determined character to me. It is sad to see, him getting to such bad tasted piece of cheese after dreaming for almost twenty years.
The writer sometimes could have finished the story in much optimistic manner because it is always really heart breaking to understand that one's long time dream has collapsed.
Though I think all the readers should give a good credit to Gopi's solid determination whatever childish that was.
This story also can take as a social criticism of Nepal. Place of the women in society and pointlessness of Brahmin ideas are represented by Mani and her daughters-in-law.
