Baton Rouge is French for "Red stick." In 1699, French explorer Sieur d'Iberville lead an explorating party saw a reddish cypress pole (the red stick) festooned with bloody animals. It was placed there by the Indians to mark the boundary between the Houma and the Bayou Goula tribal hunting grounds.
