∙ 12y agoThe autonomic nervous system is the system of nerves and brain functions that operates without conscious control, such as breathing, sweating, salivating, etc. When your body needs more oxygen, for example, the autonomic nervous system sends signals from your brain to the lungs to breathe more deeply. Although you can consciously control your breathing to an extent, the autonomic nervous system takes over if you deprive yourself of too much oxygen. That's why we keep breathing when we sleep or fall unconscious.
