The theme of the poem The Sea by James Reeves is the roughness of the sea and the almost never ending activity of the sea.

The Sea by James Reeves is basically a long metaphor, and he uses many onomatopoeias in his writing to make the connection between the sea and a dog. The poem has occasional rhymes but no rhythm.

Author and poet James Reeves (real name John Morris Reeves) was born on July 1, 1909, in Harrow, England and studied at Cambridge University. One of Reeves earliest works, a collection of his poems, was 'The Natural Need', published in 1936.He continued writing until his death on May 1, 1978.The actual date when James Reeves wrote 'The Sea' appears to be unknown. It is a very short poem, and may have been included in one or more of his many books of poems.

It is a poem written by J. Reevs. The dog is metaphorically compared to the sea. It describes behavior of the sea during the monsoon and after the monsoon.
It wouldn't have the same effect. By comparing the sea to a hungry dog, Reeves employed a sense of fear and desperation in the reader. The 'hungry dog' metaphor also allows the reader to compare the waves of the sea to 'eating' the coast. Techniquically, the subject matter of the poem is a storm at sea, therefore wouldn't fit the metaphor of a well-fed dog.
