This poem was written in John Donne's "stage 2" or his Uxorious stage where he was completely obsessed with his wife. He believed that no other world existed outside of the one bedroom apartment that they lived in. He wrote this poem while he was in jail. when he says "For God's sake hold your tongue, and let me love," he is saying why can't everyone leave me alone and let me love my wife like i want to. See his wife was a high political man's daughter and they were forbidden to wed but they snuck off and did anyway. this is why he was in jail. so in the third line when he says "My five gray hairs," he means his old age also when it says "ruined fortune" he is sayin how forever he have to bear the fact that he was thrown into jail. In the secoond stanza the first line is saying who am i hurting by loving her. In the third line of the second stanza he is saying that all his tears over loving her and their forbidden love has hurt anyone or their life in anyway. and in the sixth line of the second stanza the "plagery bill?" means the bill that states who died recently.and the 7th and 8th line are saying the worst men in history.
