Polycarp (c 69-155) claimed to have known the apostle John and to have been taught by him. The Christian tradition grew up around his death has close parallels with a tradition that grew up around the apostle John, with whom he came to be associated. In Polycarp's case, he was bound to a stake to be burned, but the fire failed to touch him, so Polycarp was stabbed to death.
