The domestic turkey that is sold through your local grocery store is Meleagris gallopavo; the wild turkey in North America is of the same species. There is a second species of turkey in Central America, Meleagris ocellata.

Domain Eukarya (nucleated organisms)

Kingdom Animalia (heterotrophic multicellular eukaryotes)

Phylum Chordata (animals with a notochord)
Subphylum Vertebrata (chordates with true vertebrae)

Class Aves (feathered vertebrates ie birds)

Order Galliformes (grouse-like birds)
Family Phasianidae (pheasant-like galliforms)

There are two species

The Wild Turkey (which was domesticated and is now devoured rather often at Christmas and Thanksgiving) is Meleagris gallopavo.

The still wild, completely undomesticated species is Meleagris ocellata.
