Anywhere from 32 degrees, F to perhaps a hundred degrees or more, if the river or stream was very shallow. This would allow thorough heating from the Sun.

I have gone swimming, for instance, in the very deep Lake Pend Oreille (pond-oh-RAY) where in the summer the water temperature must have been close to 40 degrees. This lake is a few miles from the snow-capped mountains and Schweitzer Ski Resort.

I have gone swimming in Lake Coeur d'Alene, (cur-duh-LANE) south of Pend Oreille, which is comfortable to swim in, but it is farther from the mountains are most of it is fairly shallow, so it gets warmer from the Sun. Parts of Coeur d'Alene, at least where I waterski, must be close to 70 degrees, F.

Why do most rivers have wider channels than streams?

Streams are merely tributaries of rivers. A river is the wider channel into which smaller creeks, streams and rivers flow. (Streams do not flow out of rivers.) Streams carry water from higher sources, emptying into the river. As more streams empty into a river, it tends to become broader, simply because of the greater volume of water it is carrying.
