Clouds are relatively close to the surface of the Earth and act like a blanket to trap the heat that the Earth has close to the surface. Without the clouds the heat rises and mixes with the very cold air of the atmosphere.

if its really cloudy, then the clouds are probably covering the sun, making it dimmer and thus not as light as on a sunny day.

On cloudy days the weather is different because the clouds keep the sun from shining through fully. When the sun is not fully shining it will be cooler and sometimes may be muggy.
