Depending on the type of thermometer you have, it can be taken orally, rectally, under the arm, in the ear.
Yes, you can measure body temperature by putting the thermometer under your arm (in which case it should measure below 36.5 degrees Celsius.) You can also get ear thermometers, but these work quite differently to regular oral/underarm thermometers. Forehead thermometers are also available.

Three ways of taking a vital temperature are using a digital thermometer orally, using a tympanic thermometer in the ear, or using a temporal artery thermometer on the forehead.
An ear thermometer should be placed carefully in an ear to measure the temperature. The temperature is then taken by an infrared mechanism in the thermometer.
Digital ear thermometers measure the infrared radiation coming from an eardrum.

There is an ear thermometer?
Your question sounds a bit wrong, so I assume you mean "What type of thermometer is used to measure body temperature" The answer: you can use... a) a normal clinical thermometer b) a digital clinical thermometer c) a forehead thermometer (i.e. FeverTemp) d) ear thermometer (more precise but more expensive) I hope that answers your question.
under the tongue, armpit, rectum, ear(with a tempanic thermometer)
There are four ways to get someones temperature: orally (by mouth), axillary (armpit), rectally or they can stick a thermometer in your ear. Axillary is the least accurate but sometimes is the only way to get a persons temperature.
You put the thermometer in what you want to get the temperature from. If you want to measure body temperature, the rectum would be the best way to get an accurate reading with an old school thermometer. There are however new thermometers which are as effective in an ear.
